5 Things I Would Do If I Had to Start My Health Journey Again

There is so much information about health today that it can feel overwhelming.

Macros. Supplements. Special diets. Complicated workout programs.

Sometimes it feels like you need to learn a whole new lifestyle before you can even begin.

But honestly, if someone asked me today, "Where should I start if I want to feel healthier?"

My answer would actually be very simple: Go back to basics.

Over the years, through my own journey with health, becoming a mom, and now working as a health coach, I’ve realized something important:

Most people don’t need more complicated advice. They just need to focus on the few things that truly matter.

If I had to start over today, these are the five things I would focus on first.

1. Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is something we often ignore, especially when life gets busy.

I see it in my own life all the time. When I sleep well, I feel like a completely different person. I wake up with more energy, I’m more patient, and I’m much more motivated to move my body.

But when I don’t sleep enough, everything feels harder.

I feel tired. I crave more sugar. Even simple tasks feel overwhelming.

Good sleep supports many important functions in the body. It helps regulate hormones (including hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin), metabolism, recovery from exercise, mood and stress, and even our immune system.

Sleep is not lazy. Sleep is recovery.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for your health is simply going to bed earlier.

2. Add More Protein

If someone tells me they want to start eating healthier, the first thing I usually suggest is adding more protein.

Not because it’s trendy, but because it works.

Protein helps keep you full longer and supports your muscles, especially if you’re active. It can also help stabilize energy levels throughout the day.

One approach I like to share is this: Focus on adding good foods before removing others.

In my house, it often looks very simple: eggs, Greek yogurt with fruit, a smoothie with protein powder, and meals with chicken, fish, or cottage cheese.

You don’t need a perfect meal plan.

Just start asking yourself: "Where can I add some protein to this meal?"

Small changes like that can make a big difference.

3. Move Your Body

Movement doesn’t have to mean an intense workout every day.

You don’t need the perfect program or the perfect gym. You just need to move your body regularly.

For me, the gym became something much bigger than just exercise. It’s a space where I release stress, challenge myself, and clear my mind.

But movement can look different for everyone: a walk outside, a fitness class, dancing, or anything that gets your body moving.

The most important thing is consistency, not perfection. The key is finding a time that works for you.

4. Stop Comparing Yourself

This one can be difficult, especially today with social media.

It’s so easy to look at someone else and feel like we are behind.

But something I remind myself often is this:

You can’t compare someone on day 1 to someone on day 100.

Everyone is on a different path. Different experiences. Different responsibilities. Different starting points.

Your progress is yours.

Let other people inspire you if you want, but don’t let comparison stop you from starting.

5. Take Care of Your Mind

A healthy lifestyle isn’t just about food and workouts.

Your mind plays a huge role in how you feel.

Mental health and physical health are deeply connected. Stress, overthinking, and negative thoughts can affect sleep, energy, and even our eating habits.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is simply slow down.

Go for a walk. Write your thoughts down. Take a few minutes to breathe. Spend time with people who make you feel good.

Taking care of your mind is part of taking care of your health.

Final Thoughts

Starting a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be complicated.

You don’t need the perfect diet, the perfect workout plan, or the perfect timing.

You just need to start with the basics.

Sleep. Eat well. Move your body. Be kind to yourself.

Small habits, repeated daily, can create big changes over time.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply go back to basics.
